The Thai Meteorological Department has issued Summer Storm Warning No. 10, alerting residents in upper Thailand to prepare for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential hail as a powerful seasonal storm system moves across the region.

The warning, announced on April 19, 2026, covers multiple provinces in the northern, northeastern, and central parts of Thailand, where forecasters predict intense thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and localized flooding. The department emphasized that the storm poses risks to agriculture, infrastructure, and public safety, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas vulnerable to flash floods and landslides.

Storm Impacts Already Reported in Northern Provinces

In Chiang Mai’s Doi Ang Khang area, residents reported a rare hailstorm on the morning of April 19, with ice pellets accumulating heavily on roads and vegetation, creating a landscape resembling snowfall. Video footage shared by local news outlets showed white-covered terrain and damaged crops, prompting concerns among farmers about losses to temperate-zone produce such as strawberries and cabbage.

Authorities in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Nan provinces have begun monitoring river levels and preparing evacuation routes in anticipation of sudden runoff. The Meteorological Department noted that while hail is uncommon in summer storms, it can occur when strong updrafts carry raindrops into freezing upper atmospheric layers, a phenomenon more likely during intense seasonal transitions.

In addition to hail, the storm has brought torrential rain to parts of Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun, with rainfall rates exceeding 50 millimeters per hour in some areas. Urban centers including Khon Kaen and Udon Thani in the northeast have also reported sudden downpours, leading to temporary flooding in low-lying streets and drainage systems overwhelmed by the volume of water.

Official Advisory and Public Safety Measures

The Thai Meteorological Department urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in mountainous regions, and to secure loose objects outdoors that could become hazards in high winds. It also advised farmers to protect crops and livestock, and recommended that residents in flood-prone areas keep emergency supplies ready and monitor official updates through radio, television, and the department’s website and mobile application.

Disaster prevention offices in affected provinces have been activated, with local governments coordinating with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to pre-position sandbags, prepare shelters, and disseminate warnings through community loudspeakers and social media channels. The department emphasized that the storm system is expected to persist over the next 24 to 48 hours, with gradual improvement anticipated by April 21 as the system moves eastward toward Laos and Vietnam.

Seasonal Context and Forecast Outlook

Summer storms in Thailand typically occur from March to May, driven by the buildup of heat and humidity that fuels convective activity. While such storms are annual occurrences, the intensity of Warning No. 10 reflects a particularly strong influx of moist air from the South China Sea interacting with cooler air masses from the north, creating unstable atmospheric conditions conducive to severe weather.

The department noted that although individual storms cannot be directly attributed to long-term climate trends, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in recent years aligns with broader patterns observed in Southeast Asia. However, it refrained from linking this specific storm to climate change, citing the need for long-term data analysis rather than event-based attribution.

As of the evening of April 19, the Meteorological Department continued to monitor the storm’s progression and confirmed that no casualties had been reported. Officials urged the public to remain vigilant, follow official guidance, and avoid spreading unverified information on social media that could cause unnecessary panic.
