Thailand has approved a landmark infrastructure initiative known as the Land Bridge project, aiming to create a competitive alternative to the congested Malacca Strait, a critical global trade route. The project, valued at approximately 1 trillion baht (around $29 billion), will connect the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea through two deep-sea ports and a modern transport network, positioning Thailand as a key logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

Project Overview and Economic Impact

The Land Bridge project involves the construction of two deep-sea ports—one in Laem Riow, Chumphon, on the Gulf of Thailand, and another in Laem Ao Ang, Ranong, on the Andaman Sea. These ports will be linked by an 89.35-kilometer transport corridor, including a six-lane motorway and dual-gauge railways (standard and meter-gauge). The infrastructure will utilize “smart port” technology, such as automated container handling, and adhere to “green port” principles to ensure environmental sustainability.

The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) has projected an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 17.38% for the project, describing it as a “huge value” initiative with significant long-term economic potential. According to Panya Chupanich, the OTP’s director, this high return is based solely on the ports and their connecting infrastructure, excluding broader economic benefits.

The project is expected to reduce container shipping times between the Indian and Pacific Oceans by up to four days, cutting costs by approximately 15%. It is also projected to create around 280,000 jobs and stimulate economic growth in southern Thailand, particularly in the provinces of Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Challenging the Malacca Strait’s Dominance

The Malacca Strait, a narrow waterway between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, Indonesia, is one of the world’s busiest trade routes, handling approximately 25% of global maritime trade.
