India Thali Costs Decline Due to Vegetable Price Drops in May 2025

The average cost of preparing an Indian thali at home fell by 6% in May compared to the previous year, for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. This decline is largely attributed to lower vegetable prices,according to a recent analysis.
Tomato prices experienced a sharp decrease,dropping 29% to 23 rupees per kilogram. Last year’s higher prices were driven by yield concerns. Similarly, onion and potato prices fell by 15% and 16%, respectively. Potato prices had surged in may 2024 due to crop damage from blight and unseasonal rains in West Bengal. Onion prices had risen as of reduced acreage and yield in key growing states like Maharashtra, madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, where water availability was limited.
The analysis also noted that rising vegetable oil prices,up 19% due to increased import duties,and a 6% increase in LPG cylinder prices partially offset the potential for an even greater decrease in thali costs.
Non-vegetarian thalis also benefited from a 6% drop in broiler chicken prices.
The cost of a vegetarian thali remained stable from April to May 2025. Though,the non-vegetarian thali saw a 2% reduction during the same period.
While potato and tomato prices edged up 3% and 10% respectively month-on-month, onion prices dipped 10%, keeping the vegetarian thali cost steady. A 4% month-on-month decline in broiler prices further contributed to the decrease in non-vegetarian thali costs.
