Telstra and a government statement stated that the government will bear US$1.33 billion of the total value of the transaction, with the remainder funded by Telstra. The analysis pointed out that the reason for the Australian government’s “intervention” in this transaction may be one of the means to prevent China’s growing influence in Australia.
Telstra stated that the Australian government approached it to help it acquire the business. CEO Andrew Penn said, “Digicel Pacific is a commercially attractive asset that is vital to the telecommunications industry in the region.”
