The Battle of the Tablets: Samsung vs. Lenovo in the Android Market

▲ Samsung Electronics Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra Wi-Fi 256 GB (KRW 1,398,000)

Apple iPad, which represents the tablet PC market. Because it’s famous for its quality and mid-range price advocacy, it’s easy to spot people who have weird(?) sets using Galaxy smartphones and earbuds, Windows laptops, and iPad tablets.

But the iPad isn’t the best choice for everyone. Not only are the prices of the product and accessories more expensive than competing products, but their effectiveness also decreases if a perfect Apple ecosystem is not created. On the other hand, tablet PCs equipped with the Android operating system have relatively more freedom of setting and usability than iPads, and there are many options in terms of price, ranging from cheap to expensive models.

So, which Android tablet PC manufacturer has been the most popular? According to Danawa Research, the leader in the Android tablet PC market last year was Samsung Electronics, which accounted for half of the sales volume (about 49%).

Samsung Electronics has a Galaxy Tab lineup that covers everything from entry-level to high-end models, and is the manufacturer that responds fastest to changes in tablet PC usage patterns and trends among home consumers. Tablet PCs have large screens and are always held in the hand, so the risk of physical damage is high, so many people choose Samsung Electronics products with their strong after-sales service, even if they pay more.

However, Samsung Electronics’ No. 1 position in the Android tablet market has recently been put in jeopardy. This is because Lenovo’s sales are increasing (about 35%). Lenovo’s popular products are all “bought overseas” products, and although they cannot compare with Samsung Electronics in terms of after-sales service, they are chasing Samsung Electronics in terms of multimedia display and mobile gaming with low prices compared to specifications .

In particular, in the sales data of the last three months (23.10~23.12), Lenovo products were ranked higher than Samsung Electronics products. Samsung Electronics and Lenovo are followed by ALLDOCUBE (4.9%), Foryou Digital (2.4%) and Xiaomi (1.0%). Among them, ALLDOCUBE has gained popularity as an affordable and entry-level tablet priced under 100,000 won.

Meanwhile, with the recent release of the Galaxy Tab S9 FE (KRW 474,020), a semi-premium model of the Galaxy Tab S9, and Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus (KRW 633,850), the ranking of popular products is expected will change in the future.

In the tablet PC market, there is one thing that is surprisingly not unified and varies widely: screen size and resolution. Screen sizes range from a minimum of 6 inches to a maximum of 14 inches.

However, the size preferred by consumers is mostly between 10 and 12 inches. 10 inches (32.5%). The 12-inch range (23.3%) is followed by the 11-inch range (17.6%), which represents approximately 70% of the total. Consumers who consider portability most important focus primarily on the 8-inch range (14.9%), and 5.1% choose the 6-inch range, which is almost the same size as a smartphone. The market share of 14 inches, comparable to that of a laptop, is not high at 5.5%.

There are as many different resolution standards as there are screen sizes. Among them, the most popular are 2560×1600 (WQXGA, 27.3%), installed in many mid-to-high-end models, and 2000×1200 (WUXGA+, 26.4%), installed in many budget tablets. together they represent approximately 54% of the total.

3rd place is 1920×1200 (11.8%), 4th place is 2800×1752 (8.3%) applied to Samsung Electronics Galaxy Tab S8/S9, 5th place is 2944×1840 (8%) applied to Xiaomi Xiaomi Pad , 6th place is Samsung Electronics Galaxy Tab S8/ Followed by the 2960×1848 resolution (5.5%) applied to the S9 Ultra.

In the past, the refresh rate was indistinguishable because both low-priced and high-priced models were 60 Hz, but now that the difference between low-priced and high-priced models is clear, it has become an important purchasing decision factor when choosing a mobile device.

Note that 60Hz is still top of the chart for single refresh rates, but has lost its majority. Excluding 60Hz, the remaining 90~144Hz combined accounts for 53%, so it’s safe to say that high refresh rates will be the trend in the tablet PC market in the future. In detail, 1st place was 60Hz (47%), 2nd place was 120Hz (36.9%), 3rd place was 144Hz (13.0%) and 4th place was 90Hz (3.1%). Since Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Tab S9 FE, which will be released in January 2024, is the first FE model to support 90Hz, the market share of 90Hz is expected to increase further in the future.

Since Android tablets usually support external storage such as microSD cards, the importance of basic storage is considered relatively low compared to the Apple iPad. The first place 128GB (41.9%) and second place 64GB (26.0%) are both not very large capacities, and the market share decreases towards 256GB (18.7%) and 512GB (3.9%). There are also products that provide virtually no basic storage, such as 16GB or less (1.5%).

What is more important than storage space is RAM capacity. RAM capacity has a big impact on the performance and comfort of your tablet, so the more memory, the better. The one with the highest market share is the 8GB one (29.1%), while among medium-high range tablets and tablet PCs with a gaming concept, the basic products are mainly equipped with 8GB.

In second place is 4 GB (28.9%), installed mainly in cheap entry-level tablets, followed by 12 GB (15.9%) and 6 GB (13.2%). If you add all 8~16GB, it comes to 47.4%, which is almost a majority. Considering this trend, to survive in the future tablet PC market, it is expected that tablet PCs will need to be equipped with 6GB for the entry-level model, 8GB for the mid-range model, and 12GB or more for the high-end one . model to meet consumer expectations.
