The Chiribiquete Natural Park will be protected with international cooperation

The Serranía de Chiribiquete National Natural Park is a World Heritage Site:

In 2018, the Serranía de Chiribiquete National Natural Park, of more than 4.2 million hectares, It was included in the list of World Heritage Sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“This launch of the perpetual fund to conserve Chiribiquete is a milestone for environmental cooperation. We have always thought that we need great resources and yes we need them, but constant,” said the Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad.

The financing of this program is achieved through the German Legacy Landscapes Fund (LLF) after a formulation process led by National Natural Parks of Colombia together with the NGO Zoological Society of Frankfurt, which will be in charge of managing the resources.

“This will allow us to strengthen the management of the entity in its long-term programs, considering that it is precisely the National Parks that is responsible for the conservation of Colombia’s natural heritage and culture in perpetuity, in addition to the importance of this work not only for the country but for global climate action,” said Luis Olmedo Martínez, director of Parks Natural Nationals.

Minister Muhamad added: “For us this is a milestone for COP16, showing that we need real management and not just declaring protected areas but actually how we protect them.

Cali, the main city in the Colombian Pacific, will host the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16), which will be held between October 21 and November 1 of this year.
