The Collapse of Hua Mak Indoor Stadium: Investigating the Cause and Ensuring Safety for Future Events

Roof Collapse at Hua Mak Indoor Stadium Shakes Up Ba Wheelchair Competition

Yesterday, at approximately 5:00 pm, chaos erupted at the Hua Mak Indoor Stadium when its roof unexpectedly collapsed, just moments before the opening ceremony of the Ba Wheelchair competition was set to commence. The stadium, which was also due to host the Women’s Under 25 Skating World Championships, saw its roof, beams, and ceiling crumble, causing panic among athletes and officials in attendance. Tragically, two members of the live broadcast crew sustained minor injuries during the calamity. Prompt action was taken, and all participants from the 10 countries involved were successfully evacuated.

Although further investigations are necessary, the preliminary assessment suggests that heavy rainfall played a significant role in this catastrophic incident. The roof’s canvas, unable to withstand the weight of the incessant downpour, ultimately tore apart, resulting in the stadium’s structural failure. Remarkably, history appears to have repeated itself, as a similar incident had occurred previously, also linked to a torn canvas. Despite protests calling for a change in materials, the canvas used remained unaltered.

Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), personally inspected the area, expressing remorse for the distressing turn of events. He reassured the public that comprehensive preparations had been made, but the severity of the rainfall and subsequent canvas damage thwarted these efforts. Dr. Yodmanee emphasized that such an occurrence should have been avoidable, given that the canvas had been replaced with German-quality material only two years ago. Determined to ascertain the true cause, an intensive investigation has been launched, ascertaining that swift remedial action is imperative.

Consequently, alternative arrangements for the wheelchair basketball competition were made in consultation with Mr. Chatchart Sittiphan, the Governor of Bangkok. Thai-Japan Din Daeng Stadium emerged as the viable substitute, garnering utmost support and collaboration from Bangkok authorities. Expressing deep concern, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Miss Sudawan Wang Suphakit Koson, urged the SAT to prioritize the well-being of the injured and extend every possible assistance to athletes and the organizing committee.

To rectify the situation, an order has been issued to temporarily close the venue and conduct a thorough inspection to comply with international safety standards. Simultaneously, the SAT is actively coordinating with the sports engineering department and relevant external parties to address the matter at hand.
