The Debate Over Collective Annual Leave: Employees’ Responses to Company Policies

The Lunar New Year holiday starts in three days. Some companies operate so-called ‘collective annual leave’, which allows employees to rest on the days before and after the holiday. Some say they can rest without worrying about others, but some younger workers also complain that they can’t rest on the days they want.

Reporter Cho Eul-seon listened to their responses.

This is an internal announcement from those associated with the SK Group.

The plan is to implement a joint annual holiday for all employees on the 12th of this year.

The days before and after the holidays, as well as Fridays in months without public holidays, are designated.

It was said that the cancellation of annual leave should be avoided unless for essential reasons.

Complaints arose mainly from young workers who did not get much annual leave.

Citizens’ responses were subtly divided.

[양수빈/30대 직장인 : (연차를) 정말 필요한 날에 쓰지는 못할 것 같아서 지정된 것보다는 그냥 자유롭게 쓰는 게….]

[안병열/50대 직장인 : 조직 내에 눈치를 보지 않고 (공동연차로) 명절이나 연휴 때 자기 계획을 세워서 활용할 수 있으니까.]

Some companies designate and implement collective annual vacation days in the name of employee welfare and work efficiency.

Although there is no system called collective annual leave, based on Article 62 of the Labor Standards Act, companies can allow employees to take days off on certain days.

However, you must follow the procedures.
