As ‘Facebook’ (hereafter referred to as Facebook), a first-generation social media service (SNS), celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, it was found that the number of people in Korea who used the Facebook mobile application increased than once a month has fallen below 10 million. .

According to mobile index data from mobile data giant IGA Works on the 9th, Facebook’s domestic monthly active users (MAU) in January were 9,913,855. This is a decrease of 1.64 million people compared to a year ago. MAU refers to the number of users who use the service more than once a month.

In particular, this is the first time Facebook’s monthly MAUs have fallen below 10 million since May 2020, when IGA Works began a combined analysis of the two major app markets.

To begin with, Facebook’s MAUs had already fallen below 10 million at the end of last year, but the number has changed due to a recent update to the method for generating iOS Mobile Index data estimates.

Facebook is an American social media that was started by founder Mark Zuckerberg on February 4, 2004 with the aim of making the world more open and connected.

Facebook, which was the number one SNS until the mid to late 2010s thanks to its convenience, openness and scalability, gradually declined, losing its leadership to Instagram, another related service from the same company. In 2021, the management company’s mission also changed from Facebook to Meta.

During this period, the dominant view was that it had lost its previous reputation as the departure of Generation Z (the generation born from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s) to platforms for producing and posting short videos such as TikTok accelerated.
