“The Devil is in the Details”: Scuderia AlphaTauri’s F1 Technical Director on Downwash Aerodynamics and the Quest for Success

Jody Egginton, Scuderia AlphaTauri’s F1 technical director, says the downwash aerodynamic package is not the only key to success and that “the devil is in the details”. Since the current regulations were introduced in 2022, teams have moved towards the downwash concept, following in the footsteps of the pioneers at Red Bull.

But Egginton says there are no guarantees in embarking on such a path and teams need to figure out how to make the most of it. “Whatever the regulations, people converge,” Egginton told Autosport. “And Red Bull, McLaren and some teams are taking really interesting development directions and everyone is paying attention to what they do.” At the highest level, our concept is that of downwash. “It’s a similar concept to many other teams” “But the devil is in the details. Even if the cars don’t get on the podium every weekend, there are cars that have really exceptional characteristics. “We always see what everyone is doing and that’s important understand it collectively. “Anyone can sit there and draw the concept of downwash, but the devil is in the details.” “We are making progress with many small details on the car,” Egginton said, adding that the main aim of all F1 teams is to enable them to work effectively on different types of tracks, stressing that it is about having one car. “There are a lot of carrots and things to look for,” Egginton said. “But you have to make sure the car has the right range of motion and is drivable.” “As regulations mature, we become too attracted to certain methods and lose some handling characteristics. It is becoming increasingly important to avoid falling into the trap of “riders looking for a wide freedom of movement in order to exploit aerodynamic performance on different types of circuits” and “they want to win championships. Or, if you want to be very strong, you have to be consistent.” One of the things we learned in 2019, 2020 and 2021 is the importance of this. “Egginton said McLaren’s performance jump in 2023 could be a hint. he suggested that it had become one. “McLaren is a clear example of what you can do if you understand the details.”
