The district city ends free public transport: It ran out of money!

Public transport in Vranov nad Topľou is no longer free for passengers. Two years after its introduction, the city could not find the money to subsidize this service, which it provided not only for the residents of the city, but also for the entire district. The change comes as part of austerity measures the city is implementing to cope with current economic challenges.

The mayor of the city, Ján Ragan, explained that despite the popularity and growing use of free public transport in the last two years, the current financial situation does not allow maintaining this program in full.

Public transport will remain free only for seniors

“We have a challenging year ahead of us and we have to be smart in using our resources,” Ragan said. “However, we want to continue to provide support to our seniors, which is why we have decided to maintain free transport for citizens over 65.”
