The Essence of Purpose: Lessons from Imam Malik and the Elephant in Madinah

18 March 2024, 02:00 AM IST

The famous hadith scholar Imam Malik continues to teach and recite hadiths at Masjid Dunna Bawi in Madinah as usual. The pupils have gathered around and the class is listening. Immediately there was a cry: “An elephant has come to Madinah.” The people of Madinah had never seen an elephant before. Madinah is not a settlement. Everyone in the congregation clapped their hands on Imam Malik and rushed out to see the elephant. Only one of the disciples named Yahya bin Yahya Allaisi left the congregation. He sat as if the matter of the elephant did not affect him. Seeing this, Imam Malik asked him: “Why did you not go with them?” Have you seen an elephant before?” Yahya’s answer: “I did not come to Madinah to see an elephant, but to see Malik.”

If we think about the essence of this story, only one person in the crowd understood the purpose of coming to Madinah. That is why he did not go with the scattered ones. His energy was not wasted here and there. However, others came out to enjoy the view.

How big is the difference between the person standing in the audience and those who have come to see the elephant. There are two types of people in Ramzan. One group is determined by their goals. They have decided what to get from Ramzan. They are well aware of the fruits to be reaped in this holy month. But another section is completely indifferent to the precious feasts of Ramzan. There are a variety of enjoyable ways to attract them.
