The Everlasting Fascination of the Titanic: A Century After the Disaster

The world was shocked by the news of the Titanic disaster. The Titanic was built in unprecedented size and comfort. But the Titanic was supposed to be the biggest shipwreck in history. When the disaster became a movie, it made waves on the silver screen. People are excited to hear and tell stories about Titanic. A century after the disaster, people still listen to stories about the Titanic with interest.

A ship of dreams

Titanic was a wonder the world had never seen before. It was called the ship of dreams. Because that ship was the most luxurious and the largest that had been built up to that time. It had more amenities than a luxury hotel. Titanic became the last word in luxury. And yet the great voyage of the ship ended in great disaster.

A magnificent feast

The food on the table was as luxurious as the other amenities. Every feast was rich with the most delicious dishes in the world. The first class dining saloon could accommodate 554 passengers.

The illusion of never sinking

Titanic’s builders claimed it would never sink. The reason was the design that resisted sinking. However, when an iceberg hit the North Atlantic, this claim was false. On April 14, 1912, the ship struck an iceberg. The wrecked ship sank completely by the next morning.

Watertight compartments

The ship had 16 watertight compartments which prevented water from entering if something happened to the ship or it was damaged. But when the ship hit the iceberg, the ship also broke and the water came in.

Mysterious signs

In the hours before Titanic sank, distress signals were sent using Morse code. The Titanic’s messages about the disaster included cryptic messages from the nearby ship SS California. It is believed that this prevented the Titanic from receiving timely warning. The true nature of these signals is still unclear.

Titanic did not have enough lifeboats

Although there were 3,320 people on board, there were not enough lifeboats on board. The ship had only 20 lifeboats which could hold only 1178 people. This meant that only lifeboats were kept, which could only accommodate a third of the people on board.

Music calmed the passengers

Even when the ship was wrecked, the musicians on board the Titanic showed incredible courage. They continued to play music to keep the passengers quiet. She was singing ‘Nearer My God to Thee’ to the passengers when the ship sank. This scene can also be seen in the movie Titanic.

The world is still after the Titanic

A century after the Titanic disaster, there is still a huge response to every news story about the Titanic. Oceanographer Robert Ballard discovered the remains of the Titanic in 1985, 70 years after the disaster. Attempts were made to explore these ruins and recover artefacts. It is still being studied.

Over time, the Titanic and its tragic story continue to fascinate people. The romance of Jack and Rose, the disaster of the Titanic and the beautifully told film Titanic is one of the reasons for that.
