During this time, the life expectancy of Americans was 59 years. Thailand, on the other hand, experienced a shorter life expectancy of only 40.3 years in 1937.

Around 1955, there was a significant breakthrough in healthcare with the development of multiple vaccines, such as smallpox, diphtheria, and polio vaccines. This led to a decrease in epidemic outbreaks and subsequently increased life expectancies worldwide. By this time, the average life expectancy was 50.1 years globally, with Americans living up to 60.3 years and Thais up to 47.1 years.

In 1985, the threat of epidemics decreased globally, and efforts were focused on combating heart disease, particularly by reducing the risks associated with smoking. Advances in medication and treatment procedures for heart disease further improved life expectancies. During this time, the average life expectancy worldwide reached 62.2 years, with Americans living up to 69.2 years and Thais up to 67.6 years.

By the year 2015, there were significant advancements in medicines for various diseases and the development of modern diagnostic tools and surgical procedures. These advancements led to a reduction in cancer mortality rates and improvements in overall health. Thai people had a life expectancy of about 77.7 years, while global life expectancy increased to 71.8 years, and Americans lived up to 76.3 years.

In 2019, the year COVID-19 emerged, Thai people’s life expectancy reached approximately 79 years. Globally, life expectancy was 72.8 years, and Americans had a life expectancy of 76.7 years. Over the 64-year period from 1955 to 2019, Thai people lived nearly 32 years longer, while global life expectancy increased by 22.7 years, and Americans gained an additional 16.4 years.

These improvements in life expectancy can be attributed to the rapid development of Thailand’s public health system, advancement in medical treatments, the skills of doctors, and various legal measures and campaigns, such as reducing smoking rates.

Over the years, there has been ongoing progress in pharmaceutical research. For example, Rapamycin, an antibiotic used in animal studies, has shown potential for prolonging life in laboratory animals. It inhibits the mTOR gene, which is responsible for growth inhibition, and has been used to treat cancer and prevent organ rejection in transplant patients. Clinical research on Rapamycin in humans is expected to be completed by December 2023.

Another intriguing development is RED-GEMs, a regenerative DNA molecule discovered by a research team from Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with PTT Company and Innobic (Asia) Co., Ltd. Animal models have shown positive results, with improvements in strength, activity, and softer quality of newborn pigs. Human clinical trials for RED-GEMs are expected to begin around 2023, with potential production and release by 2024.

The evolving field of consumer information and medicine has prompted The Economist magazine to hypothesize that people may live up to 120 years. While the potential to reverse aging through medication exists, it may not be a universal solution for all elderly individuals. However, with Thailand’s population retiring at 60 years old, their extended life expectancy has led to a longer period of “good” lifespan.

Thai males can expect an average of 68 years of healthy life, with a life expectancy of 72.2 years. This means that after retiring at 60, they can enjoy eight years of unemployment in good health, followed by four years of declining health before passing away. Thai females, on the other hand, have an average of 74 years of healthy life and a life expectancy of 78.9 years, resulting in 14 years of unemployment after retirement in good health and five years in poor health.

Maybe we need to start thinking about planning to care for the elderly more than just preparing a debt budget to provide welfare for the elderly only?
