The Future of Public Transport Payments: Japan’s Marubeni Corporation and Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau Utilize Facial Recognition Technology

Japan’s Marubeni Corporation and the Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau tested a payment service demonstration using facial recognition technology. This technology allows passengers to pay the fare in approximately two seconds by pointing the tablet at their face. The AI facial recognition technology was developed by RDWorks (Shibuya, Tokyo): even if passengers wear masks, the system can recognize faces with a recognition accuracy of over 99% and is expected to be fully introduced in 2024 .

The motivation behind this innovative technology is that the process of digitalizing local transport is relatively slow and existing payment methods require specialized equipment, which incurs enormous costs. Due to factors such as declining birth rates, the operating environment of local institutions is difficult, and cash is still the main payment method. Therefore, the introduction of facial recognition payment technology will help improve payment efficiency and alleviate the difficulty of using transportation for rural elderly people.

In the field of facial recognition payments there is not only Marubeni but also other competitors. For example, JR-West introduced related equipment last year, and Panasonic Connect is collaborating with Osaka City Rapid Railway. Furthermore, Marubeni plans to expand this service to other local transport systems to cope with the special local operating environment. Marubeni plans to apply the system to retail stores and other places in the future, as well as expand the facial recognition technology throughout the region and expand the service abroad.
