The History of Calorie Counting

Calorie counting is common in today’s food labels, menus, and fitness apps. We often associate salad with fewer calories than pizza. Yet, this understanding was not always so clear.

Calorie as a measurement in nutrition emerged in the late 19th century. It gained popularity in the 1920s, thanks to Lulu Hunt Peters, a female doctor in a male-dominated field. She graduated from the University of California when less than 5% of medical students were women. Peters wrote a bestselling book in 1918, titled “Dieta y Salud: Con la clave de las calorías,” which taught calorie counting for weight loss. Despite evidence that counting calories is ineffective for sustainable weight loss, it remains a popular practice.

What is a Calorie?

The term “calorie” comes from the Latin word for heat. It was first identified by French chemist Nicolas Clément in the 1820s as a measure of heat needed to power machines. American chemist Wilbur O. Atwater later adapted this concept for nutrition. He studied how much energy food provided to the human body.

Atwater’s research included detailed records of food’s calorie content, a method that remains significant today. People needed this knowledge in an era when malnutrition was common. The goal was to help poor populations receive adequate nutrition.

From Scarcity to Abundance

In the early 20th century, food supply improved due to advancements in technology. More food became available, leading to increased body weights, especially in the United States. Work became more sedentary, shifting concerns from scarcity to excess weight.

With new attitudes towards beauty, the ideal body changed from curvy to slim. Peters tapped into this shift. She began counting calories to shed her extra weight and shared her journey in newspapers, leading to widespread attention.

A New Approach to Weight Loss

Peters applied Atwater’s research to her weight loss efforts. By consuming fewer calories than she burned, she lost about 30 pounds. Her engaging writing made her ideas popular. She urged readers to think in terms of calories rather than food quantities.

She advised, “You should recognize and use the term calorie as frequently as you do yard or gallon.” Her advice emphasized that calorie counting could lead to a healthier lifestyle.

The Connection Between Weight and Health

Peters’ work took place alongside growing evidence that excess weight could harm health. Studies showed that people over 35 had higher mortality rates correlated with higher weight. With fewer infectious diseases due to better hygiene, chronic conditions like heart disease became more prevalent.

Peters promoted balanced eating without eliminating food groups. Her methods differed from extreme diet fads of the time, making her approach seem reasonable.

The Ongoing Obsession with Calories

Today, calorie counting remains popular but is often criticized. Experts know it fails to capture the full nutritional value of food. Many continue to count calories because it provides a simple way to manage food intake. This focus on numbers gives a false sense of control over health and weight.

Despite its flaws, calorie counting is easy for those looking to lose weight. The simple principle of consuming fewer calories than burned has held its ground for over a century. Thus, the practice endures in modern culture.
