Two Suspects Arrested in Reconvilier After Multiple Fraud Attempts
The Bernese Cantonal Police detained the two suspects in pretrial custody following a vehicle control in Chaindon on the afternoon of September 30, 2026, as reported by lematin.ch. Officers tracked down the suspects’ car after fresh reports of fraudulent attempts emerged in Reconvilier.
The Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office Jura bernois-Seeland opened a formal investigation to determine whether the two detained men are connected to a broader wave of crimes reported across the region.
Sixteen Reports of Fake Police Scams Across the Jura bernois
Between September 29 and September 30, 2026, authorities logged 16 distinct scam reports across multiple municipalities, according to lematin.ch. The affected locations include La Neuveville, Saint-Imier, Corgémont, Sonvilier, Villeret, Reconvilier, and the Plateau de Diesse.

The perpetrators primarily used telephone calls to target residents, falsely claiming that victims’ credit cards had been stolen or that suspicious behavior had occurred near their homes. These pretexts aimed to trick citizens into surrendering personal data, banking credentials, and valuables.
While the vast majority of targeted residents recognized the deception and hung up or alerted authorities, at least one victim in Saint-Imier fell prey to the scheme, lematin.ch noted. In La Neuveville, 24eures.ch and 20min.ch reported that one of the fraudsters went a step further by visiting a victim’s home directly to demand a bank card.

Police Issue Urgent Regional Warnings and Prevention Advice
The Bernese Cantonal Police have renewed public safety warnings, advising residents never to hand over money, bank cards, or PIN codes to strangers. Authorities emphasized that neither police officers nor bank employees will ever request such sensitive items or financial codes over the telephone or at a doorstep.
Parallel prevention efforts are underway in neighboring areas. Vallon.info reported that the Commune of Val-de-Travers, in collaboration with the Neuchâtel Police, scheduled a public safety conference at the Salle Fleurisia in Fleurier on October 1, 2026, to educate the public on similar tactics used by fake bankers and fake police officers.
Authorities urge anyone targeted by suspicious phone calls or visits to immediately disconnect, refrain from sharing financial information, and contact emergency services via 117 or 112.
Prosecutors Investigate Extent of Regional Criminal Network
It remains unconfirmed whether additional accomplices remain at large or how many of the 16 reported incidents can be directly tied to the two men currently held in pretrial detention. Investigators have not yet disclosed whether the suspects have confessed or what specific assets were recovered during the vehicle search in Chaindon.
