Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – In a significant announcement, Saudi Minister of Culture Amira Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan revealed that Twaif, known for its rich literary heritage and the ancient market of Ukkad, has been included in UNESCO’s prestigious list of creative cities.

The news came through a mail ‘X’ from Minister Badr, who expressed her delight at the recognition bestowed upon Twaif. The city now joins 54 other cities that have been designated as creative cities by the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay.

The inclusion of Twaif in this esteemed network highlights the emphasis given to culture and creativity in the city’s development strategies and innovative practices. Twaif’s addition brings the total number of cities in the UNESCO Creative Network to an impressive 350, spread across more than 100 countries.

UNESCO classifies cities into seven creative areas, which include crafts, folk arts, digital arts, design, cinema, and culinary arts. Twaif, with its thriving literature scene, particularly showcased by the famous Souq Uqad, exemplifies the city’s commitment to nurturing and promoting creative expression.

Badr Al-Azakar, a member of the board of directors of the Amir Mohammed bin Salman ‘MISK’ Foundation, regards Twaif as a city rich in literary heritage and inspiring architectural wonders. The governor of Twaif, Amir Saud bin Nahar bin Saud, emphasized that the city’s inclusion in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a momentous achievement, reflecting the deeply rooted history of literature and culture that the people of Twaif have cherished for millennia. The governor expressed gratitude to the Minister of Culture for her unwavering support in establishing Twaif as the capital of Arab poetry.

The culture minister said that Twaif, the land of poetry and literature, and the ancient market of Ukkad have been included in UNESCO’s list of creative cities.

The Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, announced that 55 cities have been designated as creative cities. Twaif is one of those towns. These cities stand out because of the place given to culture and creativity in their development strategies and innovative practices. This brings the number of cities that are members of the UNESCO Creative Network to 350. Iowa cities are spread across more than 100 countries. The creative sector includes seven creative areas namely crafts, folk arts, digital arts, design, cinema and culinary arts.

A city rich in literature as Souq Uqad is rich in its current names, and its inspiring constructions, said Badr Al-Azakar, member of the board of directors of the Amir Mohammed bin Salman ‘MISK’ Foundation, on the occasion of Twaif’s inclusion in the Network UNESCO Creative Cities. Amir Saud bin Nahar bin Saud, the governor of Twaif, said that Twaif’s entry into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a crowning achievement in the history of literature and culture that its people have lived for thousands of years. The governor also said that he would like to thank the Minister of Culture for his support in making Twaif the capital of Arab poetry.
