Despite Joel’s grim fate⁣ in season two ‌of HBO’s The ‍Last of Us, showrunners haven’t ruled out the possibility of his return. Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed the future of the series, including potential ‍explorations of Joel’s past, during a recent Q&A session.

When asked about delving into the time between Sarah’s death and⁤ Joel’s meeting with Ellie, Druckmann suggested it’s not ‌entirely off the table. “It’s always good to leave some things a mystery,” Druckmann said, adding that they occasionally tap into those mysteries when relevant to the story.

Mazin acknowledged the challenges of exploring Joel’s past in season two, given the impact of his death. The narrative needed to focus on the immediate aftermath and lead-up to that event. However, he hinted at more flexibility in future seasons.

“And this season was tricky as it ‍was so driven by this traumatic event: Joel ⁤dies,” Mazin said.‍ “But I think next season, we probably will have a bit more flexibility… maybe a side trip to, you know, Joel⁤ and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we’ll never know.”

Druckmann noted the unexpected exploration of joel’s childhood in season two, episode six, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of⁤ the show’s direction. mazin echoed this sentiment when discussing season three, stating that plans could change rapidly.

Mazin assured viewers that they ‍haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced,⁤ or many other characters, even those who have died in the story. While Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, had ⁤a wrap party, the show could explore a younger ⁤version of the character with a different actor.

For now, season three will likely focus on Abby, mirroring⁣ the game’s outlook shifts. The season two finale showed Abby overlooking a Wolf base in seattle.

What’s next

The showrunners remain open to exploring different facets of the The Last of Us universe, leaving ‌fans to speculate about Joel’s potential return and the direction of future seasons.
