 Updated May 26, 2025

As the Jackson group prepared to‌ leave Seattle, Abby arrived, immediately engaging in a confrontation. After subduing⁤ Tommy and killing Jesse,Abby recognized Ellie. A⁣ tense exchange ended with Abby pointing a gun at Ellie, declaring Ellie⁢ had wasted her second chance before a ⁢shot rang out. The⁤ screen than cut to black, leaving Ellie’s survival uncertain until Season 3.

Series co-creator Craig⁤ Mazin told Collider that the show is now in “more of a traditional cliffhangery mode.” Mazin added, “You’re telling a story,⁤ and then you end the season with something that says, ‘Whoa, this is ‍going to change⁢ a whole bunch of things, and we’ll see you when we get back and‍ pick it up from there.'”

The show’s narrative shift mirrors the controversial moment in‍ The Last of Us Part II video game, where the main playable character switches from Ellie to Abby. While Ellie survives the encounter‍ in the‌ game, the show may delay revealing her fate, first focusing on Abby’s experiences during‌ the same period in Seattle.

This change‌ aims to⁣ provide Abby’s perspective, fostering⁢ empathy for her alongside Joel and Ellie. Though, the game’s reception was ‌mixed,⁣ with some fans expressing intense dislike‍ for Abby.Laura Bailey, who‍ voiced and ⁣performed motion capture for ⁤Abby, faced harassment and threats. Isabela Merced revealed that HBO increased security for Kaitlyn ‌Dever, who ‌plays Abby, due to concerns about potential⁣ backlash.

Mazin noted a more positive reaction to ⁤Joel’s death in the show compared to the game.‍ “They understood, ‘Oh, my God, no! Somebody that we loved is dead.‌ What will happen now?'” he told Collider. “It was not, ‘Let’s go stand in front of HBO and throw eggs or blame Kaitlyn Dever.’ No. People reacted like a normal audience would theoretically react.”

What’s next

Mazin⁤ indicated that adapting the complete Last of Us story will likely require four seasons. The Last ‌of Us series ⁣continues to evolve, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this post-apocalyptic saga.
