(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Oh Jin-song = A study has shown that the risk of infection with carbapenems, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria, increases when stomach acid suppressants and antibiotics are used together.

The National Institute of Health, Korea Agency for Disease Control and Prevention, announced on the 8th that the results of this study were recently published in Gut Microbes, a leading journal in the field of microbiology.

The researchers analyzed the clinical information of a total of 282 patients who had carbapenem-resistant enteric bacteria and those who did not after being admitted to the intensive care unit, and obtained fecal samples from 98 of them and performed the analysis of the intestinal microbiome.

Accordingly, it was confirmed that the risk of carbapenem-resistant enteric bacterial infection was increased in the group of patients who were simultaneously prescribed antibiotics and gastric acid suppressants due to the active spread of antibiotic resistance genes.

Carbapenem-resistant enteric bacterial infection is one of the bacterial infections caused by antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is considered an urgent threat worldwide, as therapeutic drugs are limited and the mortality rate is very high when the bacteria invade the blood.

The researchers said: “Excessive use of gastric acid suppressants may affect the gut microbiome and cause side effects such as carbapenem-resistant enteric bacterial infections.” use the strategy to verify its effectiveness,” she emphasized.
