The Future of Hydrogen in North Franche-Comté: Challenges and Opportunities
There are concerns about the future of the hydrogen sector in North Franche-Comté, even as companies have invested heavily in this renewable energy source in recent years. The sector is grappling with significant challenges, as evidenced by the struggles faced by key players in the region.
Investment and Steep Setbacks
One notable example is Forvia, an equipment supplier based in Allenjoie. The company manufactures tanks for the automotive sector but is currently dealing with partial unemployment due to a lack of orders, according to the CFE CGC union. Similarly, Mcphy’s giant factory in Fontaine, which produces electrolysis for separating hydrogen from oxygen, is also struggling. These difficulties were highlighted in a forum on hydrogen in the automobile sector held in Montbéliard on February 26.
“We cannot, once again, waste time,”
Exclaimed Christophe Husson, member of the collective “Rebuilding,”
The trade unionist, who is also a CFE-CGC union delegate for Forvia, outlined the current difficulties facing the sector in France:
- Europe’s strategic choices are impacting the hydrogen market, which is also experiencing the challenge of uncertain state policies; while electric vehicles surging in popularity in the U.S. have their own setbacks.
- The hydrogen sector might have to tackle fierce competition and regulatory challenges, akin to those faced by the solar industry in California and states nationwide.
A strategic meeting is in order to revise funding mechanisms for hydrogen energy projects versus emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, which obtained hefty funding over the past years.
Public Procurement as a Catalyst
The hydrogen sector’s representatives are worried about being overlooked in the coming years, despite hydrogen still struggling to gain traction within the region.
Christophe Husson, the Forvia union representative, asked for support to resuscitate the hydrogen sector in North Franche-Comté, suggesting this strategy for business:
The machines are in place, the teams are already trained, just the orders are needed.
Christophe said, withWe are ready
This will pass to initiate the market through public procurement. If you want to reduce costs and be competitive, you have to produce
He raised growing concerns of legal liquidation and state bankruptcy across the country, including a notice on Feb 19 of liquidation announcement by Hyvia .
The company emphasizes that similar liquidations elsewhere across France highlight the importance of public procurement.

Elected Officials’ Response
The elected officials of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomeration are aware of these pressing concerns and are actively pushing for meetings with Prime Minister to unlock the opportunities lying within Hg uncertain Financial Situation.
Didier Klein, the vice-president in charge of economic development, mentioned recent developments in his statements showcasing available steps being cautiously taken:
“We intend to organize meetings at the Parisian level in an attempt to work on plastics and recycling. It is doubtful that the Prime Minister can unlock the situation since there are other options to be explored. “Though Hydrogen still nota Limited market
In this phase where government grants are still helpful, the government efforts in the region bring tonnes of possibilities in progress without ignoring further development in AI that provide enough impetus to boost hydrogen energy to the next level.
Abiding by measures, these concerns make a case for vigilance among policymakers, industry players, and other stakeholders to address these concerns right away.
Near Future
While the future of hydrogen in North Franche-Comté remains uncertain, predicting the strategic solution is breathtaking. Measuring progess within developing next gas, micro-grids and battery will help in marketing within the country and beyond.
