The Equatorial Guinea national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the current African Cup of Nations, after topping the first group with 7 points, while the Guinean national team arrived third in the third group, with 4 points.

During the group stage, the Equatorial Guinea national team succeeded in achieving victory over Guinea Bissau and Côte d’Ivoire, and tied with Nigeria, and is considered the strongest attacking team in the tournament so far with 9 goals.

On the other hand, Guinea won against Gambia, drew with Cameroon, and lost to defending champion Senegal.

This will be the first ever meeting in the African Cup of Nations between Equatorial Guinea and Guinea, and this will be the third time that the Equatorial Guinean national team will face a team for the first time in the tournament, after drawing 1-1 against Nigeria and 4-2 against Guinea Bissau.

Equatorial Guinea has reached the knockout stages in all four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2012, 2015, 2021 and 2023). Since the adoption of this “group stage” system in 1963, it is the only country to play in more than one African Cup of Nations and reach the knockout stages on each occasion.

Guinea lost its last six matches in the Africa Cup of Nations in the knockout stages, and failed to score in each of its last four matches, two of which were in the round of 16 in 2019 (3-0 against Algeria) and 2021 (1-0 against Gambia).
