The ousted Gabonese president was placed under house arrest in Sahara Média

The President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, was placed “under house arrest,” surrounded by his family and doctors, while one of his sons was arrested on charges of “high treason,” as announced by the military who staged a coup in the morning.

“President Ali Bongo is under house arrest, and he is surrounded by his family and doctors,” said a statement read by soldiers from the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions on state television.

Today, Wednesday, a group of officers in Gabon announced the annulment of the election results, the dissolution of all state institutions, and the closure of the country’s borders until further notice, following the announcement that President Ali Bongo won a third term.

The putschists said in a statement on Gabon 24 TV that their decision was the result of what they described as “the lack of credibility of the recent general elections.”

The officers emphasized that they “represent all security and defense forces and that they have decided to” defend peace by ending the existing regime.
