Bahrain: A Home to a Large Indian Community

In a recent report released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it has been revealed that Bahrain is currently home to around 320,000 Indian expatriates. This staggering figure is a testament to the strong bilateral ties between Bahrain and India.

Significant Indian Presence in Gulf States

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, including Bahrain, have become a hub for Indian expatriates. According to the latest Non-Resident Indian (NRI) status reports, the GCC states alone house over 8.8 million Indians, constituting a significant portion of the Indian diaspora.

Among these Indian expatriates in Bahrain, more than 200,000 are Malayalis, as per records from the Indian Embassy. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu community comprises 50,000 individuals. It is worth noting that Bahrain serves as a melting pot of diverse Indian cultures.

Greater NRI Presence in the GCC

Out of the total NRI population, more than half have chosen to settle in the GCC states. Remarkably, GCC Indian Overseas accounts for over 66 percent of the overall NRI population as of March 2022, based on reliable data from the Rya Mantralaya count.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the leading destination for Indian expatriates, with a staggering 3.41 million individuals calling it home. Saudi Arabia closely follows with 2.59 million Indians, while Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman host 1.02 million, 740,000, and 770,000 Indians, respectively. Bahrain firmly secures its place in the Gulf region with its Indian population counting up to 320,000.

Indian Expatriate Communities Across the Globe

The Indian diaspora extends far beyond the Gulf states. Astonishingly, there are 1.28 million Indians residing in the United States, showcasing their strong presence in the North American region. The United Kingdom also hosts a substantial Indian community, with 350,000 individuals embracing the British soil.

Moreover, countries like Australia, Malaysia, and Canada have also witnessed a significant influx of Indian expatriates. Australia proudly accommodates 240,000 Indians, while Malaysia and Canada have established communities of 220,000 and 170,000, respectively.

India’s presence across the globe is truly remarkable, reflecting its strong global influence and the capabilities of its talented workforce. These Indian expatriates contribute significantly to the economies of their host countries and serve as cultural ambassadors, showcasing the rich heritage of India.
