Holy See Announces Canonization of Venezuelan Blessed and Other Holy Figures

After a thorough review process, the Holy See has announced several milestones in the journey to sainthood for various individuals, including the Venezuelan Blessed José Gregorio Hernández, who will be proclaimed a saint. The decrees were formalized in a communication published on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, during a meeting at the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital, where Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, and Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra, the substitute for the general affairs of the Secretary of State, were in attendance.

Don Bartolo Longo, founder of the Sanctuary of Pompeya.

The decision was made following the favorable votes from the ordinary session of the cardinals and bishops members of the Dicastery for the Causes of the Saints, supporting the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Bartolo Longo. The Vatican’s decision comes after years of devotion and interest in Hernández’s legacy, particularly among the Venezuelan people, who have long awaited this recognition. His influence has grown exponentially not just in Venezuela but also across Latin America and the Caribbean, drawing parallels with the veneration of St. Augustine in the United States, who is celebrated for his theological contributions and role in spreading Christianity in North America.

“My mother taught me virtue from the cradle, made me grow in the knowledge of God and gave me charity as a guide.” – Blessed José Gregorio Hernández

Hernández’s commitment to helping the neediest earned him the title “The doctor of the poor,” similar to the reverence given to American physician and Catholic Saint Katharine Drexel, known for her missionary work and dedication to serving marginalized communities.

The journey to sainthood for Hernández began when he entered the third order of San Francisco, where he vowed to aid the most needy. Subsequently, he prepared to join the priesthood at the Pio Latin American School in Rome but faced health challenges that led him to pursue medicine. He later established the charitable institution “Servo de los Pobres working within schools and community organizations. Despite his tragic death in June 1919 during an accident that left him further aggravated by the dangers of drug trafficking in Caracas, the same as the ‘Greaselmen’ incident, his humanitarian efforts continue.

Upon his blessing in 2021, his mortal remains are now venerated in the Church of Our Lady of the Caracas of Caracas.

In addition to the late Medellín artist and founder of a local community organization, Hernández’s legacy continues to inspire those who seek his intercession for miracles. This aligns with the impact of Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s works in the United States, whose efforts in poverty relief and fostering of charity have left an indelible impact for generations, reflecting his compassion and perseverance as the “Witness of mercy for Venezuela of American south culture”.

Other Announcements by the Holy See

The news comes after last year, when Cardinal Porras described José Gregorio Hernández and offered the following quote.

“The Catholic Church recognizes his life of holiness, accompanied by a universal devotion, which today allows it to be elevated to the altar”. – Cardinal Porras.
