In Texas’s South Plains region, the onset of measles has been identified that almost 60 children have been infected. The main doctors say that the current situation is “inevitable” because the immunization of the Menonite community is low.

The Texas Health Service Bureau confirmed 58 cases of measles in 13 patients as of February 18.

Vaccine Scepticism and Pandemic Influence

This outbreak has raised concerns about fueling vaccine skepticism, which has already been politicized by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the acquisition of the Department of Health and Human Services by a major vaccine skeptic, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This development has ignited debates about public health policies and the role of government in promoting vaccinations.
In the Texas South Plains, the Mennonite community has a long history, dating back to the 15th century. The conservative Christian sect has historically had lower vaccination rates compared to the general population.

Vaccination Rates and Efficacy

The ideal vaccination rate for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) is 95%. However, Gaza County, the epicenter of the outbreak, has a vaccination rate of about 80%. According to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS), approximately 91% of Texas children born in 2020 received at least one MMR vaccination.

The current situation is “inevitable” because everything that falls short of the ideal vaccination rate is vulnerable to the spread in the local community. — Linda Yancey, an epidemic expert at Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas.

The expert warnings are clear: If the community falls below the 95% protection rate, it is like a dry kin ring waiting for the first fireworks.

Underprivileged Community

A spokesperson for TDSHS elaborated the spread of measles in the Meno Knight community in Texas South Plains. Though the exemption of the community wasn’t given emphasis on religion but on one’s lifestyle.

Most of the measles cases are vaccinated, according to TDSHS. The statement reads, The Menonite Church can freely choose vaccinations is not extensive to vaccination.

The Mennonite family does not want to be involved in traditional health care and messages to vaccinate the child according to the schedule, and many people do not need to be vaccinated by attending small private schools in the community.

Current efforts to address the outbreak include educating the affected community about the importance of vaccination. The TDSHS is developing information messages in three languages — low German, Spanish, and English — to reach as many people as possible. The initiative to Develop the information means that the Mennonite community can fluently speak these languages.

According to TDSHS data from 2023-2024, 45 out of 58 cases in Gain County’s three school districts were confirmed, and almost half of all students were exempt from the vaccine. Looph highlighted Independent School District reported that 47.95% of K-12 students were exempted from vaccination.

More Frequent Measles

The U.S. has maintained measles elimination status since 2000. However, in recent years, outbreaks have become more common, threatening this status. “The place we hear occurs every two years,” said Luis Ostrosky, head of the infectious disease department at Uzwells.

The pattern is very similar. It is a very close community with a low vaccination rate that introduces measles, and is leaked from the community to the community adjacent to the forest fires. — said TDSHS.

In 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 16 measles outbreaks. So far, two outbreaks have been reported this year.

It seemed to increase in localized measles, and the United States lost its condition. — Said Ostrosky.

Health Care Implementation in Texas

If an infectious disease teaches us something else, it can handle almost everything. Will we like if we have more public health resources? of course. But we have the ability to handle this, and even after practicing after the infectious disease, she said. — Said Yance, the expert.

Yancey also noted, There are no treatments or antiviruses for measles, but most people who contract measles are completely restored. Despite this, one out of five children receiving the virus is hospitalized, one in 20 pneumonia occurs, and one in 1,000 can lead to encephalitis that can lead to permanent disorders.

To protect your children who are worried in a community with worried measles, vaccination for children aforementioned illness should be considered and their importance to parents should be highlighted.

Kennedy’s Past Involvement

Kennedy has a controversial history with measles. In 2019, he traveled to Samoa, where the country faced a significant measles outbreak. The Samoan government initially suspended the measles vaccine after two babies died due to improper administration. Despite the resuming of vaccines, many parents remained hesitant. There was a significant outbreak prior to this, eventually leading to 83 deaths and over 5,600 infections within a few months.

Kennedy’s critics accused him of exacerbating the vaccine hesitancy in Samoa. Kennedy himself denied any wrongdoing, stating the measles virus was the cause. The Democratic Party questioned Kennedy’s role in the Samoa outbreak during his confirmation hearing, particularly given his recommendation that Samoa lift its ban on a vaccine. Kennedy reaffirmed his stance, stating, No, absolutely not.

Measles in the United States

Measles infection is characterized by a fever, cough, runny nose, and watering eyes, usually caused by fungi, followed by a red skin rash. Symptoms typically appear 7–18 days after exposure to an infective person. The rash usually starts on the face, progressing down the body, lasting about 5–7 days in total.

In the United States, the most effective measure to prevent the spread of measles is vaccination. The MMR vaccine, routinely given to children, is highly effective in preventing measles. The CDC recommends that children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, with the first dose given between 12 to 15 months of age and the second dose between 4 to 6 years of age. Adults who have not been vaccinated or have not had measles should also get the vaccine, particularly those at high risk, such as college students, healthcare workers, and international travelers.
