As the cost of lunch increases due to rising prices, the number of office workers buying lunch boxes is increasing.

According to ‘Price Participation’, the Korea Consumer Agency’s comprehensive price portal on the 20th, most restaurant prices in the Daegu area show an increase. Last month, the price of cold noodles in Daegu recorded 10,417 won, kimchi stew 100 won 7,150, bibimbap won 9,367, and kimbap won 2,833. Compared to the same period last year, naengmyeon rose by about 3.3%, bibimbap by about 7.5%, white rice kimchi stew by about 2.5%, and kimbap by about 6.2%.

Office workers feel that the cost of lunch is a burden because the cost of eating out is constantly increasing. Office worker Kwon Eun-bin (female, 32) said, “Nowadays, if you want to go out for lunch, you have to think about 12,000 to 15,000 won. Even the cheapest gimbap costs more than 7,000 to 8,000 won if you eat with ramen, etc. “He said, “In a situation where you have to eat out every day, not just for a day or two, it the cost of lunch is sure to be burdensome.”

There are over 460,000 posts about lunch boxes for office workers on Instagram.

The cost of cafeterias, which are relatively cheaper than regular restaurants, is also increasing, increasing the burden on office workers. The National Statistical Office explained on the 13th that last year’s consumer price index for cafeteria meals was 116.01, up 6.9% from the previous year. This is the highest figure since 2001, when statistics on cafeteria meal costs were published.

In this situation, there is an appetite for ‘lunch boxes’ among office workers. Ms Jeong (female, 34 years old) said, “The first thing I thought of to reduce costs in a situation where my salary was fixed was a lunch box. It is burdensome to eat a meal in a cafeteria or a normal restaurant, so I n bringing lots of lunch boxes from people around me.” “It is difficult to prepare a lunch box after work, but it is unavoidable in order to reduce costs,” he emphasized.

As the lunchbox craze spreads, related SNS posts such as YouTube and Instagram posts are also increasing in popularity. As of the 19th, there were around 460,000 posts about lunch boxes for office workers on Instagram. On YouTube, videos related to lunch boxes have hundreds of thousands of views. Nahee Kim (female, 29), an office worker, said, “I don’t want to prepare the same lunch box every time, so I refer a lot to YouTube and Instagram. There is a lot of content that gives easy explanations, so I often follow them.” He added, “I also share related content with my colleagues.” “I do it sometimes,” he said.
