Actor Heo Jun-ho, who appeared in director Kim Han-min’s film ‘Noryang: The Sea of Death’, said this in an interview at a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 20th.
In this work, he played Deng Zi-ryong, a Ming Dynasty general who helped Yi Sun-sin (played by Kim Yun-seok) to fight against Japanese enemies. He is a brave man who jumps into enemy lines, telling his soldiers to “secure the control ball” despite the discouragement of his superior, Jinrin (Jeong Jae-young).
Heo Jun-ho recalled that he began building the character by finding the answer to the question, “So to speak, why did Teng Zi-ryong, who was sent to another country, risk his life to help Admiral Yi Sun-sin?”
“The only relationship that can give life is blood. I thought that Teng Zi-ryong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin were probably not that close of a relationship. That’s why I went (to the general), by ignore Jin Lin’s words. both of them must be remembered, “They are great people.”
He said that he had always avoided roles in films based on true stories because of the pressure, but emphasized that it was a great honor for him as an actor to take part in one of the ‘Yi Sun-sin Trilogy’.
However, when he received the casting offer for ‘Noryang’, he said, “I looked to see if there was any way to escape.” The fact that the lines were all in Chinese also seemed like a burden.
“Director Kim explained the scenario for two and a half hours, and he completely captivated me from where I was sitting. Haha. He knew every moment of the war in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin participated. Is there anyone who knows Yi Sun-sin better than this person? With that thought, faith arose.”

After Heo Jun-ho decided to appear in ‘Noryang’, he memorized all his lines. He reportedly didn’t even speak Korean with Jeong Jae-young, who played Jinrin, on set.
He called himself a “greedy actor” and said, “I’m the type of person who is never satisfied and wants to appear more (on screen) and film more.”
However, as ‘Noryang’ is a work that includes the ending of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, he tried to restrain himself so as not to stand out.
As for Kim Yun-seok, who played the role of Yi Sun-sin, he admitted, “I was honestly worried,” and “I thought about how I could support him.” This is because Choi Min-sik and Park Hae-il previously played the same role in ‘Roaring Currents’ (2014) and ‘Hansan: Emergence of the Dragon’ (2022), respectively.
Heo Jun-ho and Kim Yun-seok, who lived together in Morocco for four months through director Ryu Seung-wan’s ‘Mogadishu’ (2021), are good friends.
Heo Jun-ho praised him, saying, “He’s such a good actor that I felt jealous of Kim Yun-seok (who appears in the media) while I was taking a break from my acting career. “
Heo Jun-ho has been appearing in a variety of works, both dramas and films, in recent years. As an actor, he does not spare his body to the extent of losing 20 kg for his character in the Netflix series ‘Park Square’.
He said, “At this age, the number of works usually decreases, so I am grateful that they are giving me a script.”
“I never expected that an opportunity like this would come again. At one point, I thought I would never become an actor again. Why did you come to me? I’m not curious about that. I grateful.”
