The Selectors’ Dilemma: India’s Squad for the Twenty20 World Cup

The International Cricket Council has advised that the 15-member squad for the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies and the United States in June should be announced before May 1. Not many days left . India, who are the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup champions, are expected to announce their team by the end of this month. There are indications that the selectors will make the team announcement on Sunday. Over the last few days, discussions are going on in the cricket world about who will be included in the Indian team. Former players like Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan and others announce their teams with the players they are interested in. Although the selection of the team will be based on their performance in the IPL, priority will be given to the players who have performed well on the pitches and conditions of the West Indies. In any case, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant is known to be an unavoidable presence when the selectors sit down to take a decision. Pant, who made a comeback in this IPL after a car accident in 2022, has already scored 342 runs, including three half-centuries, in the nine matches he has played and is third among the run-getters. The fans say that the innings in which he scored 88 runs from 43 balls against Gujarat Titans the other day was enough to pick the ball. A six per ball proved that it is the same old ball that used to hit sixes from the crease. His 31 in the last over proved his ability as a finisher. Pant, who excels at keeping wickets with catches and stumps, will not be surprised if he is selected as India’s top wicket-keeper at the World Cup.

The Selectors’ Choice

1. If Rishabh Pant is the first wicket keeper then consider KL Rahul and Sanju Samson for the second position. If the experience helps Rahul, Sanju will have to stand aside. Dinesh Karthik has expressed interest but age is a handicap.

2. Hardik Pandya’s poor form is a headache for the selectors. If Pandya is left out, Shivam Dubey will have to be considered as a pace bowler. But Dubey is not bowling in IPL.

3. Akshar Patel and specialist spinner Ravi Bishnoi are also undecided. If Akshar’s all-round ability is the criterion, Bishnoi will have to be left out.

4. Opinions also arise that Ryan Parag and Chahal should be included in the team. Fans are also excited about Avesh Khan.

5. There are suggestions that Bumrah, Arshdeep, Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep will be in the team as bowlers.
