Godrej: Leading the Way in Home Appliances and More

When it comes to home appliances and lockers, there is one name that stands above the rest – Godrej. The Godrej Group, founded by Ardeshir Godrej, has been a pioneer in the industry, overcoming various challenges to achieve its remarkable success.

Established even before India gained independence, Godrej has been a household name for generations. In fact, even the Queen of England herself used Godrej products during her visit to India in 1921.

Ardeshir Godrej was born into a wealthy Parsi-Saurashtrian family in Mumbai in 1868. The Godrej family had a background in real estate brokerage, but Ardeshir had a different vision. After a failed attempt at selling surgical instruments, he was determined to manufacture goods in India. With the help of industrialist Merwanji Kama, Ardeshir secured a loan to start a lock manufacturing company.

On May 7, 1897, Ardeshir Godrej founded the Godrej Group in a small shed. His locks were not only cheaper than imported ones, but they were also more reliable. Foreign locks often had springs that easily broke, and Ardeshir capitalized on this weakness. This made Godrej locks a popular choice among customers.

But Ardeshir didn’t stop there. He wanted to produce the best quality locks in the country, and he did just that. Recognizing the increasing threat of theft, he meticulously studied lockers and developed high-security locks branded as Anchor. Starting in a small shed in Mumbai, Godrej expanded its business to include the manufacturing of almirahs (wardrobes) that not only protected valuables from thieves but also prevented fire.

During India’s freedom struggle, Ardeshir Godrej was inspired by Balagangadhara Tilak’s call for using goods produced in India. In line with this vision, Godrej launched the first Indian soap in 1906. The company later introduced Godrej No. 1 and Godrej No. 2 soaps made from natural products, showcasing their commitment to quality and local production.

Over the years, the Godrej Group diversified its offerings, delving into hair colors (Godrej Expert), pesticides (Goodnight, Hit), furniture (Godrej Interio), steel almirahs and cabinets (Godrej Storewell), palm oil development, animal feed (Godrej Agrovet), real estate (Godrej Properties), and much more. With over a century of business heritage and over 28,000 dedicated employees, Godrej continues to be a leading company in India, touching the lives of people worldwide.

Notably, Godrej’s influence extends beyond consumer products. The company played a crucial role in India’s scientific achievements, manufacturing the Vikas engine used in the Mars Orbiter Mission and contributing to the development of the launch vehicle for Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar probe.

Today, Godrej stands as a symbol of excellence and innovation. With a wide range of products and a commitment to quality, the company has left an indelible mark on the lives of millions. From almiras and locks to home appliances and beyond, when it comes to reliability and trust, there’s no name quite like Godrej.
