4 Types of Passengers Least Likely to Get a Free Upgrade on a Flight

Flight attendants have revealed the four types of passengers who are least likely to receive a free upgrade to first class. These include passengers with dirty clothes, those who are overdressed, those who smell bad or have the smell of alcohol on them, and those who appear to be causing trouble.

Dirty Clothes: A Major Turn-Off

Miguel Muñoz, a flight attendant with over 10 years of experience, emphasized that passengers with dirty clothes will not be upgraded. “Passengers who appear to be unkempt or unhygienic are clearly not a priority for upgrades,” he said.

Overly Casual Clothing: Not Suitable for Upgrades

Muñoz also noted that passengers wearing shorts, flip-flops, and overly casual clothing will not be considered for upgrades. This is because they do not present themselves as suitable candidates for a higher class of service.

Behavior and Hygiene Matter

Not only do clothes play a role in determining upgrade eligibility, but behavior and hygiene also factor in. Muñoz stated that passengers who smell bad, are drunk, or appear to be causing trouble will not be upgraded.

Dressing for Success: A Key to Upgrades

Immanuel Debeer, a travel expert at Flight Hacks, advised that dressing in business attire can increase one’s chances of getting a free upgrade. “Flight attendants may perceive you as a high-value passenger if you dress professionally,” he said. This, combined with good behavior, can go a long way in securing a free upgrade.
