The Unprecedented Longevity of LG Electronics’ GA-100SP Wall-Mounted Air Conditioner

Longevity in Innovation: Korean Couple Donates 45-Year-Old Wall-Mounted Air Conditioner to LG Electronics

Gyeongju, South Korea – Hong Yeon-moo and Moon Hee-seon, residents of Gyeongju, have generously donated their trusty wall-mounted air conditioner, the ‘GA-100SP’, to LG Electronics. The couple purchased this ground-breaking device in 1979, and it has efficiently operated for an impressive 45 years.

The GA-100SP is renowned for being the first wall-mounted air conditioner ever released in Korea. Differentiating itself from traditional models, this revolutionary device separates the outdoor unit from the main body, allowing only the main unit, responsible for expelling cool air, to be mounted on the wall.

At the time of its release, the domestic air conditioner market predominantly comprised of window air conditioners with an integrated outdoor unit and main body. Thus, the introduction of wall-mounted air conditioners was a pioneering breakthrough. Most notably, noise pollution was substantially reduced due to the separation of the external unit and the air outlet.

Another benefit of the wall-mounted design was the flexibility in placement options. In an era where houses lacked proper insulation, air conditioners installed on windows often allowed air leakage through cracks. The installation of a wall-mounted air conditioner alleviated this inconvenience, minimizing hot air seepage during summer and cold drafts in winter.

LG Electronics, recognizing the historical significance of the GA-100SP and other milestone air conditioner models, such as Korea’s first-ever window air conditioner ‘GA-111’ released in 1968 and the inaugural stand air conditioner ‘GA-025′ unveiled in 1983, will exhibit these iconic devices at the LG Inhwawon and Changwon R&D Centers. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to experience the advanced technology behind LG Electronics’ air conditioners.

Hong Yeon-moo, the generous donor, expressed his pride in the LG Electronics air conditioner that has diligently kept his family cool for 45 years without any malfunctions. He believes this feat of longevity renders the appliance highly valuable, prompting this remarkable act of donation.

Hong Yeon-moo and Moon Hee-seon, a couple living in Gyeongju, recently donated a ‘GA-100SP’ wall-mounted air conditioner to LG Electronics, which they bought in 1979 and has been working normally for 45 years.

The given product is a wall-mounted type that separates an air conditioner outdoor unit for the first time in Korea and hangs only the main unit through which the wind comes out.

At the time, the domestic air conditioner market was dominated by window air conditioners with an outdoor unit and main body, so the appearance of wall-mounted air conditioners was an innovation. Above all, the noise was significantly reduced. This is because the outdoor unit and the body through which the wind comes out are separated.

It was also welcomed that the location where the air conditioner was installed was not a window. At the time, houses did not have good insulation, so when air conditioners were installed on windows, a lot of air leaked through the gaps. By installing a wall-mounted air conditioner, you can reduce the inconvenience of hot air seeping through the window crack in the summer and cold wind blowing in in the winter.

This time, LG Electronics has various types of air conditioners, such as Korea’s first air conditioner ‘GA-100SP’, Korea’s first window air conditioner ‘GA-111’ released in 1968, and Korea’s first stand air conditioner ‘GA-025’ ‘ released in 1983. The first air conditioners will be displayed at the LG Inhwawon and Changwon R&D Centers, and will be used as a legacy to experience the advanced technology of LG Electronics air conditioners to visitors.

Mr Hong Yeon-moo, who donated the product, said, “I have been proud of the LG Electronics air conditioner, which has kept the whole family cool in the summer without any malfunctions for 45 years, and donated it because I think it is. it would be of high value as fodder.”
