Who was Ilayaraja? Who became Ilayaraja? Both of these questions are equally relevant. Although there is no evidence to confirm, he was initially a street singer who traveled throughout the interior villages of Tamil Nadu singing his songs, by word of mouth. Raja, who later went on to compose music for plays, worked as a music director behind several films. Entered the film industry with his friend Bharathiraja’s film. In 1976, Ilayaraja first composed music for the Tamil film Annakili. Everything after that is history. In 1991, the BBC carried out a survey. The aim was to find the ten best songs in the world. In that selection, the song ‘Rakamma Kayye Thatt…’ composed by Raja for the film Dalapati came fourth. His relevance is further enhanced by the fact that Ilayaraja has received rare recognition for Tamil cinema and Indian music. Indian cinema has seen many talented music directors. But there is only one musician in Indian cinema who has remained with the same influence since the day of its inception, and indeed Ilayaraja. He is not a partisan of a particular era or trend. Raja has always been a musician. Many songs have been sung in Malayalam as well. Much of it was sweet to hear. But Naushad, Devarajan Mash, Baburaj, Ravindran, Johnson and Ousepachan have composed better songs than Raja. But none of them could reach the heights touched by Raja. Only Ilayaraja has the amazing talent to compose timeless songs in seconds. Only Ilayaraja can keep the generations led by different tastes alike in his varuti. There are those who thought that Raja has sunk in the Rahman wave. Some have even wondered if Raja has become somewhat irrelevant. Rahman’s rank was so high then. He rose to Oscar status and became an internationally acclaimed musician. But with the passage of time, the old Rahman magic has slowly faded. While the Rahman name was limited to a few songs, Raja remained an active presence in films. In the meantime, he went to London and managed to prepare a full symphony.
