Theodora, ‘Boss Lady,’ Challenges Pop Star Perfection Standards
Lili Théodora Mbangayo Mujinga, known as Theodora or “Boss Lady,” is making waves in the Francophone music scene. The 21-year-old French-Congolese singer burst onto the scene in late 2024 with her song ‘Kongolese sous BBL,’ a track referencing both the Brazilian Butt lift and her first mixtape, ‘BAD BOY LOVESTORY’.
Theodora’s unique blend of goth, rap, and R&B influences has quickly garnered attention. Her lyrics, often sung in Lingala slang over West Indian bouyon rhythms, explore themes of body image and sexuality. Theodora’s rise highlights a shift toward embracing individuality in the music industry, where female pop stars often face impossible standards of perfection.
Theodora’s success reflects a broader movement toward inclusivity in the french music scene, joining the ranks of Black female artists such as Aya Nakamura and Shay. In May, Theodora performed at Les Flammes, an awards ceremony dedicated to French rap and R&B. She later received the award for Best Female Revelation.
“This project is realy for the children of the [African] diaspora. This project is for our music, for black music,” theodora said in her acceptance speech. “I’m doing this for all the black girls who are a bit weird. Don’t worry, this one’s for us.”
