A new study examined how people who can’t get rid of belly fat can reduce health risks and protect their heart. For this study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers wanted to know if adopting a healthy lifestyle could help improving waist-hip ratio (a measure of abdominal obesity and metabolic health) and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. What did the researchers discover?
Analyzing data from over 280,000 people in the UK, scientists linked genetic risk of waist fat to five factors related to a healthy lifestyle:

– regular physical activity;

– lack of alcohol consumption or moderate consumption;

– between 7 and 8 hours of sleep per night.

Over the next 14 years, the authors of the study found over 11,500 cases of cardiovascular disease, and a healthy lifestyle proved effective in reducing this risk. Moreover, the study authors noted that lifestyle factors led to reduced risk even in participants who were genetically predisposed to abdominal obesity.
