Deadrop Studio Shuts Down
Just months after controversial streamer Dr. Disrespect was ousted from his own game studio for alleged misconduct with a minor, Deadrop game developer Midnight Society confirmed this week that it is shutting down. In a statement on Twitter, the company attributed the closure to a three-year run that saw an amazing team of over 55 developers contribute to their new IP, Deadrop. However, Dr. Disrespect, in a livestream, criticized the studio’s handling of his dismissal and claimed they did not properly investigate his alleged misconduct.
GTA 6 Meme Coins Fade
Unofficial Game Theft Auto-themed meme coins continue to flood onto the Solana network, with several new takes like GTA 6 Coin and GTA Guy briefly reaching higher than a $1 million market cap. However, the success was short-lived, with most tokens crashing more than 90% from their peaks, an extremely typical fate for meme coins.
While these meme coins are the latest crypto connection to the game, rumors about potential in-game crypto rewards for players in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 have been circulating since 2021. Though unconfirmed, only time will tell if the highly anticipated game will include crypto in some way, potentially pushing crypto gaming into the mainstream.
Farm Frens Slam Ton’s Exclusivity
Telegram game Farm Frens has delayed its FREN token airdrop on the Base layer-2 network until February, citing important roadmap adjustments due to "unreasonable deadlines" imposed by Telegram and The Open Network (TON). In a tweet, the game explained that heavy-handed restrictions were placed on mini app developers following the announcement that all Telegram mini apps with crypto integrations would need to exclusively use TON. Farm Frens slammed this move, calling TON "The Closed Network" and counter to the ethos of decentralization and censorship resistance.
