A recent case study highlights the successful removal of a large solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) from a patient’s chest cavity using a minimally invasive surgical technique. SFTs are rare tumors that typically develop in the soft tissues of the body, moast commonly in the chest, abdomen, or limbs. While frequently enough benign, these tumors can grow to substantial sizes and cause symptoms by compressing surrounding structures.
The Challenge of Large Tumors
Traditionally, large SFTs required open surgery, a more invasive procedure with a longer recovery time. Though, a recent case demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of a combined approach: preoperative arterial embolization followed by thoracoscopic resection. This approach is particularly valuable when dealing with tumors that have a important blood supply,as embolization helps to reduce bleeding during surgery.
In this specific case, the patient presented with a giant SFT.
