Umphang, Thailand – A devastating explosion ripped through a crowded festival in northern Thailand late Saturday, leaving three people dead and 48 others injured. The blast, caused by a homemade bomb, occurred on the dance floor of a festival in Umphang district, Tak province.
Two individuals were killed instantly, while another succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital. The injured were rushed to local medical facilities, with some reportedly in critical condition.
Thai Prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her deepest condolences to the victims and their families. She called for a swift and thorough examination by law enforcement agencies to bring those responsible to justice.”This senseless act of violence has shaken our community,” Prime Minister Shinawatra said in a statement. “We will not rest until those responsible are apprehended and held accountable.”
Tak provincial police chief, Major General samrit ekamol, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was the result of a targeted attack. He believes the bomb was thrown during a confrontation between two rival gangs.
