Astronomers have discovered 3 previously unknown moons in our solar system: 2 additional moons orbiting Neptune and 1 orbiting Uranus. The latest statistics show that Neptune has 16 known satellites and Uranus has 28.

The small, distant moons were spotted using powerful ground-based telescopes in Hawaii and Chile, and announced Friday by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center.

One of Neptune’s new moons has made the longest orbital journey ever known. It takes about 27 years for the small outer moon to complete one revolution around Neptune, the vast icy planet furthest from the sun, said Scott Sheppard, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington who contributed to the discovery.

He said it took the small outer satellite about 27 years to complete an orbit around Neptune, the giant icy planet furthest from the sun.

The new moon orbiting Uranus, with an estimated diameter of just 5 miles (8 kilometers), is likely the smallest of the planet’s moons.
