Table of Contents
Estonia is on high alert as the national weather service forecasts severe thunderstorms and potential hail across several regions, prompting authorities to issue a Level Two – Orange – Hazardous Weather Warning for multiple counties. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions to ensure their safety and protect their property from the impending meteorological onslaught.
Prepare for the Storm: Essential Safety Measures
Meteorologist Kairo Kiitsak from the Estonian Weather Service has outlined critical steps for the public to take in readiness for the severe weather. “We will see during the night how much hail there actually is, if any. It is a matter of minutes to hours, and onyl then can we monitor and inform people more precisely about were it hits and how large the hailstones roughly are. Better safe than sorry,” Kiitsak emphasized.
Key recommendations include:
Securing Homes: Unplug electrical appliances, close all windows and doors to prevent wind and rain ingress.
Heating Precautions: Refrain from using stoves for heating during the storm.
Outdoor Safety: Gather any lightweight objects from yards, such as trampolines, that could be blown away by strong winds.
Vehicle Protection: Park cars away from trees and, if possible, in garages. To shield vehicles from potential hail damage, consider placing mattresses or blankets over windows.
Kiitsak also advises the public to actively monitor the Weather Service’s weather radar, which provides real-time updates on the movement of rain clouds and the warning map. Both resources are updated continuously throughout the day and night.
Dangerous Weather Warning Issued for Southern Estonia
A Level Two – Orange – Dangerous Weather Warning has been officially issued for Saare,Pärnu,Viljandi,Tartu,Valga,Põlva, and Võru Counties for July 11th. The Surroundings Agency has stated, “Unusual meteorological phenomena have been forecast.Be very vigilant and keep regularly informed about the weather forecast.Be aware of the risks that might be unavoidable and follow any advice given by authorities.”
This warning signifies a heightened risk of severe weather, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and the potential for damaging hail.
Impact on Maritime and Air Traffic
While the impending risk of thunderstorms and hail is not expected to disrupt air or sea traffic significantly, individuals operating in maritime areas are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution. ”Anyone operating in the area around the Gulf of Riga and Väinameri this evening or at night should be very cautious when those thunderclouds pass over,” Kiitsak cautioned.
Widespread lightning Activity Recorded
The severity of the situation is underscored by recent data from the Environmental Agency, which recorded nearly 62,000 lightning strikes across the Baltic states, parts of Belarus, and the western edge of Russia from Thursday through Friday morning. This widespread electrical activity highlights the volatile nature of the current weather system.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow official guidance from the authorities. You can follow the weather forecast in each county here.
