DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers, who struggled against Bailey Ober last season, turned the tables Saturday, defeating the Minnesota Twins 10-5 at Comerica Park. Kerry Carpenter,Gleyber Torres,Riley Greene,and Zach McKinstry all homered off Ober,backing a strong outing from Casey Mize.
Mize (8-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs after Byron Buxton’s two-run homer in the third. Mize retired 13 of his final 15 batters and avenged an April 15 loss to the Twins. He is now 5-0 with a 2.00 ERA at home.
The Tigers’ offense exploded after Ober struck out Torres and Greene in the first. Spencer Torkelson’s double in the second set up Matt Vierling’s sacrifice fly, marking Vierling’s return from the injured list. Detroit then scored in five straight innings.
Carpenter tied the game in the third with a home run. Torres followed in the fourth with a two-run shot. Greene homered to lead off the fifth, and McKinstry added another to start the sixth. McKinstry later contributed a sacrifice fly in the seventh off former Tiger Joey Wentz.
Ober became the first pitcher since May 20, 2017, to allow four home runs to the Tigers at Comerica Park. A.J. Griffin of Texas surrendered homers to Alex Avila, Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez, and Nick Castellanos that day.
