Culver city, California – TikTok’s Culver city headquarters were briefly evacuated on friday, October 4, 2024, following a series of online threats directed at the company and its employees. The Culver City Police Department (CCPD) swiftly investigated and arrested Joseph Mayuyo, a 33-year-old resident of Hawthorne, in connection with the incident.
The Threat and Evacuation
According to the CCPD, the threats were posted on social media and prompted TikTok security personnel to initiate an evacuation of the building located on Bristol Parkway. The nature of the threats was not immediately disclosed, but authorities deemed them credible enough to warrant the precautionary measure.
Negotiation and Surrender
Police identified Mayuyo as the source of the threats and converged on his Hawthorne residence on Saturday,October 5,2024.However, upon arrival, Mayuyo allegedly continued to post threats online, stating he would not be taken alive. The CCPD deployed a crisis negotiation team, who engaged with Mayuyo for approximately 90 minutes. Following the negotiations, Mayuyo voluntarily exited his home and surrendered to authorities without further incident.
Charges and Investigation
Mayuyo was booked on a charge of making criminal threats. As of October 6, 2024, the CCPD has not released information regarding a potential motive or any prior connection between Mayuyo and TikTok. The investigation remains ongoing.
