Public Forum Scheduled Ahead of Council Vote

Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker will host a public forum on August 24, 2026, regarding the proposed Anchor Resource Center. The downtown 24/7 low-barrier homeless services center has drawn community focus.

The gathering is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Calhoun Ballroom on the second floor of the Grand Wayne Center at 120 W. Jefferson Blvd. Mayor Tucker and Chief of Staff Andrew Downs will lead the forum. City administration officials have stated their hope that all nine members of the Fort Wayne City Council will attend. An American Sign Language interpreter will be present. The city also provided a livestream link on YouTube at youtube.com/@FortWayneIND.

Inside the Low-Barrier Facility Plan

The proposed site for the facility is 333 E. Washington Blvd. The center is designed to serve men, women, and families with a daily capacity of about 150 people. It will offer mental health counseling, workforce training, housing, and access to showers and bathroom facilities.

City leaders stated that the low-barrier model would prioritize immediate safety for clients, staff, and neighbors ahead of background checks, sobriety, strict curfews, and identification requirements. City leaders maintained that after reviewing dozens of other locations, the downtown location remains the best suited to serve the homeless community.

Public Comment Guidelines and Previous Debates

Attendees will have an opportunity to speak during a designated public comment period. City officials noted that speakers should remain respectful and avoid using inappropriate language during the proceedings.

The meeting comes in addition to several hundred resident questions answered on the city’s Engage website. More than a hundred residents previously spoke on the topic at City Council meetings. Mayor Tucker initially rejected a request from Councilman Hartman to hold a public forum on the project before her office announced the August 24 session last week.

Diverging Community Views on Downtown Location

The forum is being held one week before city council members are scheduled to vote on funding for the East Washington Boulevard location. Community feedback submitted online showed both support and opposition. Much of the opposition centered on the downtown proximity to schools and potential impacts on nearby businesses.

Addressing the homelessness challenge is vital as we work to help individuals and families in need. The plan for the Anchor Resource Center is the right plan in the right place, and we need City Council’s support.
