Tire Trouble Takes a Tumble: Noi Bai Airport Sees 35% Drop in Aircraft Tire Ruptures
Noi Bai International Airport Enhances Flight Safety with Effective FOD Control Measures
Noi Bai International Airport has been proactively inspecting and monitoring compliance with regulations on controlling foreign objects on runways and taxiways to ensure flight safety.
Through the collaborative efforts of Noi Bai International Airport, airlines, ground service companies, and businesses operating at the port, the number of aircraft tire punctures caused by foreign objects (FOD) has decreased significantly.
According to a report by Noi Bai International Airport, in the eight months of 2024, the weight of FOD collected was 167.2 kg, representing a 41.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, the number of aircraft tire tear incidents decreased by 34.15% compared to the same period in 2023.
To achieve this result, Noi Bai International Airport has implemented various practical measures, including:
- Organizing periodic training and raising awareness among personnel on ensuring environmental hygiene and strictly controlling FOD at the airport area.
- Promoting voluntary safety reporting and regularly coordinating with units to exchange information on FOD control and other safety work.
- Inspecting and monitoring compliance with FOD control regulations at aircraft parking locations before and after flights with a minimum frequency of 10 flights/day.
- Conducting analysis and assessment of the origin of FOD occurrence and including it in the aviation safety data assessment report.
- Inspecting and using sweepers, sweepers, and magnetic suction racks to collect FOD and cleaning the airport environment daily.
The leader of Noi Bai International Airport emphasized that “after one year of implementing the commitment, many positive results have been recorded, especially in building an aviation safety culture that has become a ’household custom’ of the common house of Noi Bai, where every officer and employee working at Noi Bai airport has determined that detecting FOD, personally collecting detected FOD, and fully reporting voluntarily… has become a daily habit.”
Looking ahead, the units have signed a commitment to continue maintaining FOD control and adding appropriate solutions for each period to limit and thoroughly handle FOD sources during the process of providing aircraft services. They will also strengthen coordination in controlling and managing FOD, promptly preventing and limiting incidents related to operational safety, especially incidents involving FOD related to aircraft tires, affecting operations at the port.
