As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, prominent tech leaders are increasingly advocating for universal basic income as a response to widespread job displacement, a trend that has begun to ripple through sectors once considered insulated from automation, including entertainment.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has publicly supported the idea of a “universal high income” distributed through federal government checks as a direct response to AI-driven unemployment. In recent statements, Musk suggested that such a system could be the most effective way to address the economic fallout from automation, particularly as machines take over roles traditionally held by human workers.
Musk is not alone in this position. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has also voiced support for universal basic income, framing it as a necessary measure to ensure economic stability as AI systems grow more capable. Altman has further explored the concept of “universal basic compute,” proposing that citizens receive a share of AI-generated productivity as a form of economic empowerment.
Entertainment Industry Faces Its Own AI Disruption
While much of the public discourse around AI and job loss has focused on white-collar sectors like finance, software development, and administrative work, the entertainment industry is beginning to confront similar pressures. From AI-generated scripts and deepfake performances to automated video editing and algorithm-driven content recommendations, studios and production companies are integrating tools that reduce the need for human labor in creative and technical roles.

Tech Leaders Frame UBI as a Societal Safeguard
Proponents of universal basic income argue that as AI continues to advance, traditional employment models may no longer be sufficient to support large portions of the population. By providing a guaranteed income floor, UBI could allow individuals to pursue education, caregiving, artistic endeavors, or entrepreneurial projects without the immediate pressure of securing paid work.
