To-Do List: Why I Ditched Apps for Plain Text Files

I used Todoist for years as of its⁢ many features, which I thought⁣ I needed to organize my work and get things‌ done. Ironically, the more I used it, the less work I‌ completed.⁢ That’s as⁣ it took the focus away from the tasks themselves.I found myself spending too much time organizing tasks, managing integrations, and tweaking the app’s appearance. So I uninstalled it ⁣and switched to something simpler.

I⁤ tried to go minimalist‌ in ⁢the past‍ by switching to ⁣a command-line task manager, and I loved it. But this time, I decided ‍to go even‍ simpler and use something⁣ akin ⁣to‍ writing in a notebook -⁢ plain-text files. These days, I just need to open‍ my favorite⁤ text editor, plan my day,⁢ and get⁢ things⁤ done without‌ distracting graphical elements or needing to learn ⁣specific commands.

⁢ ⁢ ⁤ Why plain text files ⁢sometimes make⁤ more ⁣sense than to-do ⁢apps

Markdown provides some much-needed structure

Rainmeter helps pin it‍ to the desktop

Plain ‍text files typically use a .txt extension, ⁤but Markdown‌ is a better choice. Markdown files, saved with a .md‍ extension, ⁣are⁢ plain-text files that ⁢use lightweight markup syntax ⁢to render ⁣as formatted content ‌in compatible viewers. Markdown is easy to learn and ensures your to-do lists look⁣ structured, as opposed to looking bland.

I usually ⁤check my to-do lists in Windows, but there’s no ⁤built-in way to pin them ⁣to the desktop ‌for ⁢constant visibility.Luckily, a handy desktop customization app called Rainmeter exists that can help with this. Rainmeter does this through a third-party⁢ skin called ‌ Obsidian ‌Daily Notes Display skin. you just need to download it, install it, and ⁤point it to ⁣the Markdown file.
