Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is set to officially launch 80,000 Village/Kelurahan Merah Putih Cooperatives (Kopdes/Kel Merah Putih) across Indonesia, marking a important stride in empowering the grassroots economy. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (Kemenkop UKM), aims to establish robust economic service centers at the village level.
Nationwide Rollout and Operational Readiness
As of the latest data, 81,140 kopdes/Kel Merah Putih units have been formed nationwide, with 80,048 already legally established. This high formation rate signifies the readiness of these cooperatives to commence operations.
“This means Kopdes/Kel merah Putih is ready to operate,” stated Budi Arie Setiadi, the Minister of communication and Information, in a written statement on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
To facilitate widespread adoption and ensure prosperous implementation, the government has prepared 103 pilot Kopdes/kel Merah Putih. These pilot projects are intended to serve as models, allowing other nascent cooperatives to replicate the established ecosystems and streamline thier operationalization.
A New Paradigm for Village economic Services
Kopdes/Kel Merah Putih are envisioned as more than just ordinary cooperatives; thay are designed to be extensive centers for people’s economic services within villages. Their core function will be to manage and channel essential goods and services directly to the community.
The cooperative model incorporates a full suite of business units, including:
Food Outlets: Ensuring access to basic food supplies.
Affordable Medical Services: Providing accessible healthcare solutions.
Village Clinics: Establishing local healthcare facilities.
Savings and Loans: offering financial services to members.
Logistics Management: Streamlining the distribution of goods.
Furthermore, these cooperatives will play a crucial role as distributors for vital government assistance programs. This includes channeling funds and resources for the Family Hope Program (PKH), subsidized gas, and subsidized fertilizers, thereby ensuring efficient delivery to intended beneficiaries.
Capacity Building and Public Oversight
Following the launch, Kemenkop UKM will focus on capacity building initiatives. This will involve enhancing the skills and knowledge of cooperative human resources, from managers and supervisors to the broader management teams.”We will also strengthen the supervision of kopdes/Kel Merah Putih based on public participation or public control,” Minister Budi Arie added, emphasizing a commitment to transparency and accountability.
The institutional launch by President Prabowo Subianto is considered a pivotal moment in realizing the independence of the people’s economy. This major initiative is a testament to the President’s direct engagement in fostering grassroots economic development.
The successful formation of these 80,000 cooperatives is the result of dedicated efforts and robust collaboration among a cross-ministerial task force. This team comprises representatives from:
