Former WWE announcer Todd Grisham explained the reasoning behind his famously subdued delivery when Christian Cage made a surprise return to the company in 2021.
The Moment and the Backlash
During an appearance on “Insight with Chris Van Vliet”, Grisham detailed how his simple proclamation – “It’s Christian” – was not his own creative choice. He has consistently faced criticism from fans who believe his delivery diminished the impact of Christian’s return.
grisham recounted standing in Gorilla Position, the area backstage where performers await their entrance, when Vince mcmahon, then-Chairman and CEO of WWE, gave him direct instructions. McMahon, wearing glasses, gestured for Grisham to approach and simply told him to announce Christian’s arrival with the words, “It’s Christian,” and nothing more.
“I’m like, Okay, I walk over. He’s just said to me, ’When Christian walks out, I want you to just say “it’s Christian”, and that’s it.Understand?’ I’m like,Yes,sir,” Grisham said. He attempted to convey a sense of disbelief in his delivery, as if he too was stunned by the unexpected appearance. “So that’s how I did it. But I felt like, How do I do it? So I almost did it, like in my brain, like I couldn’t believe it. I was stunned silence, like, ‘It’s Christian. How can this possibly be?’ so that’s how I tried to do it.”
Despite understanding the directive, Grisham continues to receive negative feedback. “And, man, that’s probably the moast criticism I get from fans,” he admitted. “Like, ’Why does Todd hate Christian? Why did he do that? He ruined it.'”
Vince McMahon’s Outlook on Christian
Grisham revealed that McMahon’s booking decision stemmed from a personal preference for larger wrestlers. According to Grisham, McMahon “just did not like Christian,” believing he didn’t “look the part” of a top WWE star. This perception, Grisham emphasized, was despite Christian’s consistently strong in-ring performances.
“I think he thought he liked big guys, and he thought Christian just didn’t look the part. But he was such a good in-ring performer. I mean, has he ever had a bad match?” Grisham questioned.
