The Tokyo Game Show opened its doors for its 2026 iteration in late September in Chiba, marking three decades since the massive exhibition first launched in August 1996.

Origins and Console Rivalries of 1996

When the Tokyo Game Show first debuted in August 1996, Japan’s home console market was undergoing a seismic transition away from Nintendo’s Super Famicom toward hardware capable of rendering high-speed 3D graphics. Masuda Tsutomu, managing director of the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), recalls that major titles during that era routinely sold more than a million copies domestically. CESA, established in 1995 ahead of the inaugural show, aimed to develop video games into a major industry backed by cultural value.

The centerpiece of that first gathering was a limited demo disc for Final Fantasy VII, published by Sony Computer Entertainment after moving from the Super Famicom to the original PlayStation. Long lines formed at the exhibition booth to try the 3D role-playing game ahead of its January release. The title eventually surpassed 10 million copies worldwide, proving the promotional gravity of the newly founded convention.

Evolution Toward a Once-a-Year Fall Format

The event expanded rapidly during its early years, launching the CESA Awards—later renamed the Japan Game Awards—at its second iteration in April 1997, where Sakura Wars claimed the top title. As processing power grew with the arrival of the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox in the early 2000s, development cycles lengthened and game releases slowed across the industry.

Masuda notes that preparing playable demo versions for two shows per year became unsustainable for exhibitors. To sharpen the focus of the event and align it with the critical year-end and New Year sales season, CESA consolidated the gathering into a single annual autumn showcase starting in 2002.

Digital Pivots and Attendance Milestones

Aside from online-only adaptations in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance has consistently surpassed 100,000 visitors since 1996. The 2018 physical exhibition drew 298,690 attendees across four days. Parallel to the physical growth of the exhibition, Western markets embraced PC gaming and digital distribution throughout the 2000s, driving a global diversification of the medium that continues to shape modern development pipelines showcased at Chiba.
